Photinia is an evergreen plant of the genus Photinia in the ericaceae family. Is a large family of flowering trees, shrubs, and subshrubs. Branches usually much branched with curved ascending stems. Branchlets slender. Leaves usually whorled in 3-6 (3-4 in the F.Z. region), or occasionally inserted spirally, very small, margins usually rolled out, and confluent at the center line of the lower side to form a groove. Inflorescence usually consisting of head clusters of up to 20 flowers at the tip of branchlets, but sometimes spikelike in the leaf axils of branches whose vegetative growth may continue after flowering. Pedicels short and 1-flowered, usually 1-bracts and 2-opposite bracteoles, but sometimes bracts or bracteoles, rarely both absent. Calyx and corolla radially symmetric and inferior. Calyx lobes 4, free or fused to a large or small range. Corolla globular to tubular, 4-lobed, lobes usually significantly shorter than tube, in F.Z. region rather than very small, always less than 1 cm. Stamens are usually 8, rarely less (4-7) or more (12); Filaments free, inserted into lower disk, usually geniculate below anther; Anthers often appendage and dehiscent through lateral pores. Ovary 4 (8), central axle placenta. Style 1, more or less swollen at apex. Fruit a capsule dehiscent of cartilaginous locularis contained within persistent calyx and corolla. Number of seeds per compartment.
